Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Coupé
Jaguar has unveiled a new electric hypercar boasting 1,000bhp and design inspired by its racing history. Sadly, it’s only for Gran Turismo.
Should Jaguar be looking to deliver a proper hypercar to sit atop its range in a time of crisis? Probably not, appealing though the idea is, but a similarly sticky wicket a decade ago didn’t stop them unveiling the C-X75 with nearly 800bhp from electric motors powered by gas turbines. The C-X75 was actually a real car, although we were never entirely sure how much of its powertrain actually worked as intended, which didn’t make production but did have a, more conventionally-powered, outing in James Bond’s Spectre.
Now Jaguar is back with another electric Hypercar, only this time it’s a virtual reality electric hypercar designed for the Gran Turismo video game – the Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Coupé concept.
Jaguar say its design is influenced by its storied racing history with C-Type and D-Type racers, and has an electric powertrain based on that in the I-Type and I-Pace electric racers.
Influenced it may be by Jaguar’s current EV powertrain, but here it comes with a trio of electric motors delivering 1006bhp and 885lb/ft of torque for a 0-62mph in under 2.0- seconds and a top speed of 200mph.
If it were real, it would have a carbonfibre monocoque and be constructed with a range of experimental lightweight materials.
Jaguar Design Director Julian Thomson said:
This project has been completely led by our young designers and represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for them to create a vehicle steeped in our incredible heritage but pushing the boundaries of future design. The team have done an incredible job in creating something which is clearly identifiable as a Jaguar, inspired – but not constrained – by our iconic past.
Are JLR brave enough to consider building the Vision Gran Turismo Coupé for real? Almost certainly not, but its design may point to a future electric model. Or not.
The Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Coupé will be available to download for Gran Turismo from the end of November.
