Ferrari 599XX Evoluzione
There are road Ferraris and there are track Ferraris. And the Ferrari 599XX carries on the tradition of hard-core track-only cars for wealthy clients (like the FXX) where ultimate performance is achieved by ignoring homologation rules for any race. And now we have the evolution of the 599XX – the Ferrari 599XX Evoluzione.
We’ve known the Evoluzione was on the way for a while after we had reports it was out testing, but we’d not expecetd to see it make an appearance until Geneva in the Spring, but instead it’s debuting at the Bologna Motor Show.
Ferrari has managed to liberate an extra 20 horses from the 599XX to take it up to 740bhp, and they’ve also cut 35kg of fat from somewhere.
The 599XX Evoluzione has also had an areo package added which improve chassis dynamics. The key to the new package is an active rear wing which has two flaps – a bit like F1 cars – which rotate electronically to adjust downforce between the front and back in response to speed and intent. The logic is based on inputs from:
- steering wheel angle
- longitudinal acceleration
- lateral acceleration
- vehicle speed
Also included is a new front splitter and rear diffuser which help the total downforce at 200kph reach 330kg with the flaps open and 440kg when they’re closed. And new side exhausts have helped to liberate that extra 20bhp.
All clever stuff, but unless you’re a gazillionaire with a spare million or so knocking around it’s all a bit academic. However, cutting edge stuff like this on specialist Ferarris is, just like the Ferrari F1 programme, a test bed for future road cars.
