Eight years on from the rebirth of the Fiat 500, Fiat’s modern take on the iconic 500 has hit the 250,000 UK sales landmark, and still selling well.
It’s eight years since the new Fiat 500 arrived as a 21st century take on the iconic original, and despite fears the new 500 would be nothing more than a pastiche of the original Fiat has managed to make the new 500 as appealing and successful as the reborn MINI.With seemingly endless iteration (although not as many as MINI has managed) Fiat has carved a niche for the 500 that continues to grow even after so long, with everything from frugal Eco 500s via convertibles and on to convincingly lively Abarth 500s.
The 500 came in for a late-life facelift last year (ahead of a new model) which refreshed the little Fiat with cosmetic and technology tweaks, and that refresh has seen sales continue so strongly that Fiat has now clocked up 250,000 sales in the UK alone.
Total UK sales for the 500 now stand at 257,794, with March 2016 sales the third best for the 500 since it went on sale at 8,304. That impressive number helped Fiat post it’s best monthly UK sales in 12 years.
Fiat UK’s Sebastiano Fedrigo said:
The FIAT 500 has always been a popular choice with UK buyers but the figure of almost 258,000 registrations demonstrates just how unique and desirable our iconic city car has remained since it was launched.
With more improvements on the way soon, we’re looking forward the amazing FIAT 500 reaching its next sales milestone in the not-too-distant future.
Fiat’s next big challenge is to deliver an all-new 500, but until then it looks like sales of the current model are going to continue strongly thanks to the 500’s unique blend of chic, appealing kitsch and affordability.
