Fiat Fullback Pick-up arrives as a re-badged Mitsubishi L200
The Fiat Fullback double-cab pick-up has been revealed at the Dubai Motor Show as Fiat’s take on the Mitsubishi L200 and aimed at the Hilux and NP300.
Surprisingly, Fiat has had no presence in the double-cab pick-up market – a market that continues to grow thanks to tax breaks that allow businesses to run it as a commercial vehicle, despite its leisure abilities – but that all changes with the arrival of the Fiat Fullback Pick-up, revealed at the Dubai Motor Show. But the Fullback isn’t an all new Fiat pick-up, it’s actually a Mitsubishi L200 with a few tweaks and a Fiat badge.
For the UK, it looks like Fiat will only offer the Fullback as a double-cab, and it will come with the option of a 150bhp or 180bhp version of the familiar 2.4 litre diesel engine, and a choice of manual or automatic gearbox.
Beyond a few Fiat badges and grill, there really isn’t much to differentiate the Fullback from the L200, so it’s going to be a matter of choosing which floats your boat most.
But if you want a rufty-tufty workhorse that can double up as family transport at the weekend, most would think a Mitsubishi would be more robust than a Fiat, despite them being virtually the same. So it seems likely Fiat will have to differentiate itself on price, undercutting the £16.5k (plus vat) starting point for the L200.
But with probably a year to go before the Fullback arrives in the UK, we’re not likely to find out any time soon.
