Ford’s new car aimed at the burgeoning small car market in Indian and emerging markets – The Ford Figo – has now been launched with prices starting at £5k.
Back in September we told you about Ford’s big push in to emerging markets with the Ford Figo, a last-gen Fiesta look alike with which Ford hope to take on big players in the region such as Hyundai and Suzuki.
The Ford Figo – which is being built in a new £300 million Ford plant in Chennai (Madras) – has now been officially launched with a choice of either a 1.2 litre petrol or a 1.4 litre diesel. The petrol starts at 3.5 Lakh ( a smidge over £5k) and the diesel at 4.5 Lakh ( £6.5k). Which actually doesn’t sound remarkably cheap, but it’s competitive with the Hyundai i20 and the Suzuki Ritz – the big sellers.
The Figo spec is none too shoddy with airbags, ABS, central locking and seat belts all round. Interior comes in a choice of two colours – ebony black and coral red – and there’s a choice of seven exterior colours – Colorado Red, Chill, Diamond White, Moondust Silver, Panther Black, Squeeze and Sea Grey.
But the Figo is not just being produced for the Indian market – although Ford see that as hugely important – but to other emerging markets. First exports of the Ford Figo are to South Africa but Ford will be exporting to emerging markets around the globe from the 200,000 unit a year plant in Chennai.
There are no plans to bring the Ford Figo to Europe, but don’t be surprised to see it turning up as a hire car option if you venture a little further afield than the Spanish Costas for your holiday.

just got back from India and saw the ford figo….when will it be released in the u.k and how much will it cost?????

It won’t. It’s essentially the last model Fiesta (up to ’08) with a titivated body to make it look more contemporary. So it’s emerging/developing markets only I’m afraid. But you could always go pick yourself up the old model Fiesta. You should be able to pick up a decent ’08 for around £4k – and they’re still a decent car.
