Will and electric SUV with Mustang looks sell? Ford will find out in 2020.
Ford is planning an electric SUV inspired by the Mustang – perhaps dubbed the Mach 1 – for 2020, and it’s teased with a single image showing a very Mustang back end.
We know that Ford’s future is SUVs and the Mustang (and Pick-ups), and that, just like every other car maker, they’re having to plan a future which dials-in a big dose of electrification – either BEVs or plug-in hybrids. So it should be no surprise that Ford are planning a new electric SUV to bring together two of their future plans in one model. But actually, this electric SUV manages to bring in the third – the Ford Mustang.
It seems Ford hopes that delivering an SUV with an electric powertrain which looks like a Mustang on stilts is the way to go. Which seems very similar to the route Porsche took with the Cayenne when it arrived 15 years ago with a 911 nose on an SUV. The Cayenne didn’t look great, although it was a properly good car. It was also the salvation of Porsche.
So we guess Ford is hoping the world and his dog will queue to buy an electric SUV which looks like a Mustang when it arrives in 2020, either with or without a ‘Mach 1’ badge (Mustang anoraks are already up in arms about the proposed Mach 1 name on an SUV).
From what we can see in the single rear view tease Ford has delivered, the back end is very Mustang-like with its Mustang back lights and meaty haunches, and, if this early tease is anything to go by, more Crossover than SUV and with a coupe roofline.
Expect at least a year of teases for the Mustang SUV.
