‘The Grand Tour’ is the name for Clarkson, Hammond & May’s new Amazon car show
Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond have finally decided the name of their take on Top Gear for Amazon – it’s The Grand Tour.
You would have thought that coming up with a name for the Amazon Prime take on Top Gear with Clarkson, Hammond and May would be the easy part. But it seems not.Jeremy Clarkson has been reaching out to Twitter followers for some time in an attempt to get ideas on a name, with suggestions ranging from Gear Knobs to Dip Sticks by way of ‘The Best Car Show…In the World’.
But Clarkson’s frustration seem to have grown as expensive calls to lawyers turned up pre-existing uses for every name they considered. But now, finally, they’ve come up with a name – The Grand Tour.
It may not be clever and it may not be funny, but, according to Clarkson and Hammond at least (May wanted to call it ‘Roger’), it’s apt and appropriate.
It seems the format for the new take on Top Gear with Amazon will see the three presenters touring the world to play with cars, setting up a giant tent for each location as a base for their exploits. So it is a sort of ‘Grand Tour’ in the Victorian sense.
But ultimately, the name for the new Amazon show doesn’t actually have to catch the imagination of viewers; the Clarkson, Hammond and May show is a well-established format, so Amazon don’t need to give it a headline name that encourages viewers to watch.
All that really matters is the content.
