Hyundai Ioniq plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) completes the Ioniq range in Geneva

The Hyundai Ioniq range has been completed at the Geneva Motor Show with the Ioniq PHEV plug-in hybrid on show ahead of a UK summer on sale.

Electric cars are starting to become mainstream, but for most drivers a best of both worlds plug-in hybrid is the very best way to experience car electrification. Which is why Hyundai has an Ioniq PHEV in its range.

Until now, your choice of Ioniq models was either the regular hybrid or the Ioniq EV, but from this summer you will be able to get the Ioniq PHEV so Hyundai has it on show in Geneva alongside its siblings.

We spent last Christmas with the Ioniq Hybrid, and although we’re still not convinced a car’s style should be dictated by its powertrain, we found the Ioniq totally convincing and a fine family car. 

As the Ioniq PHEV is essentially the same car, we expect it to be just as appealing, and assuming Hyundai do pitch the PHEV mid-way between the hybrid and EV on price then it should fly out of showrooms.

With its 1.6 litre petrol engine delivering 103bhp, and the electric motor a further 60bhp, the Ioniq PHEV should be a bit livelier than the hybrid, has an electric only range of just under 40 miles (probably 20-22 in the real world) and official economy of 257mpg.

Of course, if you never drive more than ten miles between recharges, your economy will be better than the daft official numbers, but real owners will probably mix and match charging with petrol driving but still get the equivalent of 60mpg.

Luckily for business users, the Ioniq PHEV comes with official Co2 emissions of just 26g/km, making for appealing BIK rates.

The Hyundai Ioniq PHEV will go on sale in the UK in summer 2017, with prices likely to start at around £23,500.
