The new Hyundai SUV (pictured) WILL spawn an electric version
Hyundai has confirmed it will deliver and electric Kona SUV as well as an A-Segment SUV below the Kona and a big SUV above the Santa Fe.
The new Hyundai Kona has just been officially revealed, but rather than the new urban SUV completing Hyundai’s SUV range, it looks like it’s just the start of an SUV revolution from Hyundai.Just last week we reported Hyundai were already planning to grow the Kona range with the addition of an electric Kona in 2018, and at the launch of the Kona Hyundai has confirmed exactly that.
Hyundai say the Kona EV is a logical extension of the Kona range, following a similar path to that of the Ioniq – which offers EV, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions – although whether the Kona will eventually be offered as a hybrid, or even with a hydrogen powerplant, isn’t clear.
But what is clear is that Hyundai are expecting to deliver a Kona EV with a driving range of around 240 miles, which will make it very practical in an urban landscape, and even beyond.
As well as the Kona, Hyundai are also plotting what they call an A-SUV, in other words a ‘Micro’ SUV to sit below the Kona and ready for market by 2020.
That’s a car which will be aimed primarily at emerging markets, although we would have thought the European market would be a good bet too.
Equally, Hyundai’s plans for a new E-Segment, full-size SUV to sit above the Santa Fe look to be aimed primarily at the North American market, but it too could find a home in the UK.
It looks like Hyundai are on a full-scale SUV offensive.
