Infiniti Prototype 9 revealed as an electric retro race car
The Infiniti Prototype 9 – a 1940s inspired Infiniti take on a Grand Prix car – has been officially revealed at Pebble Beach, and there’s a new Prototype 9 video.
We’re still not entirely sure what we make of the Infiniti Prototype 9, but we’re starting to have a bit of admiration for Infiniti for actually doing it.With no real history to speak of in historic racing – certainly when compared to makers like Jaguar, Aston Martin and Mercedes – Infiniti decided to create a retro prototype as a ‘make believe we had a history in Grand Prix Racing’ project.
That was either bold or daft, but the fact that Infiniti has beautifully crafted the Prototype 9 in to a proper working car does show an enthusiasm for the project which is hard not to admire.
With most of the panels hand beaten, open wheels and even what look like period drum brakes (they’re not – they’re hiding modern discs), the Prototype 9 does look the part.
Under the skin Infiniti has made the Prototype 9 very 21st century, using what is basically the electric setup from the new LEAF and batteries from Infiniti to deliver an electric retro racer with a 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds, a top speed of just over 100mph and the ability to blat on track for around 20 minutes before it runs out of charge.
In the end, Infiniti has produced a properly interesting, beautifully crafted retro concept. As you can see in the video below.
