Jaguar F-PACE gets clever with wearable Tech

The Jaguar F-PACE – Jaguar’s first crossover – gets clever with the latest wearable tech offering a new wristband with properly useful functionality.

You sometimes feel that the application of wearable tech for cars is more about offering it because it exists, but the new Jaguar F-Pace is offering something that’s properly useful, rather than just ‘for the sake of it’.

JLR has used the new F-Pace to reveal its latest wearable technology at the Wearable Technology Show 2016, with the Android Wear watch App featuring some useful features like the ability to activate climate control, check fuel levels, monitor the car’s location and allow remote locking.

But the really useful addition is an Active Key Wristband.

The new wristband has an RFID sensor, which needs no power, and will let you leave your car keys behind when you’re out and about away from the car so you don’t have to carry a bulky key with you.

But the clever bit is that the wristband also deactivates the key, so when you leave you car behind with the key inside, all you need do is touch the wristband against the jaguar logo on the car and the car will be locked up and the key inside rendered useless.

Jaguar are keen to point out that the wristband will function in all temperatures and is waterproof, so you can go surfing, swimming, skiing, running or to the gym – or even just shopping, for a walk or to a meeting – without carrying the key or worrying someone will break in to your car and be able to use the key you left behind.

For a change, Jaguar has managed to make wearable tech properly useful. At least as long as you don’t mind wearing a Jaguar wristband.
