Jaguar XK bites the dust – XK production to end this summer

The Jaguar XK – Jaguar’s range-topping 2+2 sports GT – is to end production this summer as sales fall away after the new F-Type launch.

The Jaguar XK is the oldest car in Jaguar’s model lineup and the last real remnant of ‘old’ Jaguar. And it’s about to cease production.

Jaguar has announced the XK will end production this summer as sales fall away and the XK struggles to make sense against the new Jaguar F-Type, a situation that will only worsen when the F-Type Coupe starts to arrive in customer hands.

The writing looked to be on the wall for the XK at the start of the year when Jaguar announced ‘Special Edition’ models in the XK Signature and Dynamic R, which were touted as special additions to the XK range.

But with big price drops over the normal XK – and higher specs – it was clear the only XKs on offer would be the ‘Special Edition’ models, at up to £9,000 less than the comparable ‘regular’ XK range, meaning no real way back for the XK.

And now Jaguar has confirmed XK production will end in the summer, with no immediate plans to replace it.

However, once Jaguar has rolled out the new Jaguar XE next year – and it’s SUV/Crossover sibling based on the C-X17 Concept – it does seem likely Jaguar will return to the XK and push it further upmarket with a car to properly take on cars like the Aston Martin DB9.

So if you’ve always had a hankering for a Jaguar XK – especially the XKR – then you’d better go and grab yourself one of the  Jaguar XK Dynamic R run-out models at a list price of £70k (you’ll probably get one for a chunk less if you haggle) and grab a piece of Jaguar history – and a car that’s a proper blast to own, as discovered when we reviewed the Jaguar XKR.
