Jeremy Clarkson and Chris Evans – Handbags at dawn looming?
Jeremy Clarkson has stated the BBC offered him his old job on Top Gear, but Top Gear’s new presenter, Chris Evans, and the BBC dismiss the claim.
Top Gear is moving on, and Chris Evans is to be the new main host. But that hasn’t stopped Jeremy Clarkson, rather foolishly it seems, claiming the Beeb has actually offered him his old job back.Writing in The Sun, Jeremy claims he was offered a way back in to Top Gear last week, by an unnamed executive, but that he turned it down because someone at the Beeb had compared him to Jimmy Savile.
That story was quickly contradicted by the BBC, which stated it has not offered Clarkson a new Top Gear contract, and Clarkson’s claims seem to have strained the relationship he appears to enjoy with Chris Evans, with Evans asking on his Radio 2 show this morning if the offer from the BBC was all in Jeremy’s head. Which sounds like it might be heading for handbags at dawn.
But whatever the truth, it seems Jeremy is heading off to make a new car programme, hinting heavily on Twitter he was off to Norway with James May. Which many have taken as proof they’re off to shoot for a new programme, when in fact it’s Norway’s turn this weekend to host Clarkson, Hammond & May LIVE.
But Jeremy did also take a dig at Chris Evans, saying: “I hope Chris enjoys running what, for the next couple of weeks, is the world’s biggest car show”, implying that whatever he turns his hand to will be far better than Top Gear in the hands of Evans. And that it’ll arrive soon.
All of which is a bit silly. But there’s doubtless more to come.
