Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann has said that a third model would fit well at Lamborghini. Looks like the Lamborghini Estoque may be back on.
First we had the Lamborghini take on a 4 door Supercar at the Paris Show in 2008 – the Lamborghini Estoque – and then we didn’t. Lamborghini said that despite the favourable reaction from press and public the time wasn’t right to launch a third model like for Sant’ Agata.
That was in March 2009, but by September we were asking ‘Is the Lamborghini Estoque still on? The reason we asked was the Estoque Concept turning up on the streets of Cologne. Why? We never did find out. We speculated Lamborghini may have done it to make VW wake up and see what they were failing to green light. But that was the last solid bit of info on the Estoque. Until now.
Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann, in an interview with Bloomberg this week, said: “A third model would fit Lamborghini very well. A four- door car would be a very feasible approach.” Which is not exactly unambiguous.
Lamborghini hasn’t had the best of years with sales down in the first half of this year by 18%. That may have something to do with the Murcielago coming to the end of its shelf life, but a two car range – even with lots of variations – isn’t really enough.
The Lamborghini Estoque made sense two years ago when Lamborghini first showed it. With the very high-end luxury car market now recovering and growing it makes even more sense to a have a four door Lamborghini. The four-door supercar idea is paying big dividends for Porsche with the Panamera Turbo and for Aston Martin with the Rapide.
As it would for Lamborghini.
