We wonder if Lamborghini are still planning the Estoque after it was spotted out in Germany.
At the Paris Motor Show last year we were treated to a four-door Lamborghini – the Lamborghini Estoque. When we first heard about it we were pretty sceptical. It was bound to be another horrible attempt by a supercar maker to churn out a four door saloon to appeal to its customers with more money (and children) than sense. But we were wrong. It looked as good as the Aston Martin Rapide.
The boys at Top Gear even got hold of the Estoque to show in the TG studio. They too were astonished at what Lamborghini has achieved. A four-door Lamborghini that looked like a Lamborghini instead of some hideously overblown caricature of the marque (did someone say Panamera?).
But then came the bad news. Lamborghini weren’t going to make the Estoque, quoting the current economic downturn as the main reason. Which wasn’t entirely convincing, and we thought it may have more to do with VW not wanting the Estoque to compete with other cars in the group – like the Panamera.
But is the Estoque dead? It would seem not. The picture at the top cropped up on Team Speed, showing a complete Estoque snapped in Cologne. If the project is dead and buried, what on earth is a working Estoque doing on the streets of Cologne? I suppose your guess is as good as ours, but maybe Lamborghini decided to chuck the Estoque right under the nose of others in the VW group to see if they could continue to resist the temptation to build it.
Who knows? Hopefully we’ll find out more soon.
