It was back in November that Mercedes announced a new AMG Sport ‘Sub-Brand’, with the new AMG Sport promising a new, slightly more accessible sporty option from AMG, much as BMW’s M Performance sits a notch below full fat M models and Audi’s S models aren’t quite RS powerful.
The C450 AMG Sport looks what it is; a slightly lesser C63. That’s not to damn it with faint praise, because in almost all the ways that matter, in everyday driving, the C 450 looks a great compromise.
It gets 362bhp to play with from its 3.0 litre twin-turbo V6 (which is as much as the full fat C55 had a few years ago), enough to get to 62mph in 4.9 seconds (5.0 seconds for the estate version) and offers official economy of 37.1mpg and emissions of 178g/km.
It also comes with Mercedes four-wheel-drive 4MATIC (as all AMG Sport models will), it gets a selection of driving modes – Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual – and the steering and suspension are pretty much the same as the C 63 with AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension.
There’s also the usual AMG body tweaks with butch bumpers, black highlights, silver diffuser insert at the back, roof spoiler on the estate and 18″ 5-spoke black AMG alloys (19″ are an option).
Inside has been given an AMG titivate too with Artico/Dinamica upholstery, red contrast stitching, red seat belts, aluminium trim, sports seats, flat-bottomed nappa leather steering wheel and flappy paddles.
The Mercedes C 450 AMG Sport will arrive in the UK in summer 2015, and although prices haven’t been set yet you can be sure it’ll be somewhat less than the £59k starting price of the C63 AMG.
