Last year, at the Paris Motor Show, Mercedes unveiled the Mercedes ConceptFASCINATION which they called a Shooting Brake, and is in essence a 3 door E-Class Coupe Estate. And if rumours are to be believed, the car will make it in to production.
Car makers are searching for every niche they can fill with their cars, particularly at the premium end. Audi and Mercedes are big players (we still think the Mercedes R-Class a niche too far), and BMW play the game too, with cars like the BMW X6M and the new BMW 5 Series GT.
If the Mercedes E Class Coupe Estate does go in to production it will bring to five the number of models based on the same Class – the saloon, the coupe, the cabriolet and the estate plus this new Coupe Estate.
Although this is a new niche, it is one Mercedes could do well with. Audi has done well with its Avants, which are a streamlined version of an estate, and this E Class Coupe Estate could be a hit. Mercedes will be looking to repeat the success they achieved, and which spawned many imitators, with the Mercedes CLS – the first of the four-door coupes.
If the E Class Coupe Estate makes it to production it is likely to feature all the engines currently available, including the AMG. But it is unlikely to surface before 2011.Source: Auto Express
