The MG Icon – an SUV/Crossover Concept – has won the ‘Best Concept’ Award at the Beijing Motor Show from Autoweek Magazine.
Just before the Beijing Motor Show kicked off we got the first sketches of the MG Icon, a compact, funky SUV Crossover in the mould of the Nissan Juke with an MGB bonnet and grill. Sounds odd, but looked pretty good.
We did question whether the Icon would look as funky in the flesh at Beijing (concept sketches rarely end up looking the same in the flesh) but on the floor the Icon certainly made a statement.
In fact, the MG Icon made such a statement it’s been voted ‘Best Concept’ at the show by US motoring magazine Autoweek. Which is quite an accolade.
It means Autoweek rated the MG Icon over such show stars as the Mercedes Concept Style Coupe and the Lamborghini Urus.
Beating the Urus makes sense – apart from its high-riding stance it’s generic Lamborghini through and through – but we’re not too sure we’d have put the Icon in ahead of the stunning Mercedes CSC – the Mercedes CLA to be – as best concept.
But perhaps Autoweek didn’t just take style and looks as the only criteria; perhaps there’s an element of ‘Wow, look how far we’ve come’ in the award?
And on that basis we have to say we probably agree with the MG Icon taking the prize.
