The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV – Mitsubishi’s plug-in hybrid Outlander – has amassed sales of more than 1000,000, with over 20 per cent in the UK.
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been a roaring success for Mitsubishi, with its clever pricing (it costs the same as the diesel Outlander when you factor in tax breaks), usable electric-only range and big BIK benefits, it’s been flying out of Mitsubishi’s showrooms around the world. In fact, so successful has the PHEV become that it’s now clocked up sales of over 100,000 (101,533 as of today), and the UK has been a shining market too, with 21,052 PHEVs sold since it first went on sale in 2014.
The Outlander PHEV isn’t perfect, but it has proved to be a perfect car for many business users thanks to its BIK breaks, and even for private owners its 32 mile electric range (less in the real world) means many owners will be able to commute on electric power only, pay no London Congestion Charge and no road tax either.
Sales have also been helped by Mitsubishi continuing to improve the Outlander, with more luxury versions and a facelift too at the end of last year revealed by then London Mayor Boris Johnson in Tokyo.
Lance Bradley, Mitsubishi’s UK MD, said:
To reach this milestone is a fantastic achievement, which really underlines Outlander PHEV’s global appeal. Consumers in the UK have overwhelmingly made it their preferred choice for ultra-low emission motoring too. It is by far the nation’s leading plug-in vehicle.
And as long as the tax breaks stay in place – and there’s little else comparable on the market – Mitsubishi are going to continue enjoying impressive PHEV sales, sales that have seen half of all Mitsubishis sold in the UK come with a plug-in hybrid powertrain recently.
