New Audi SQ8 arrives for the UK with 429bhp Diesel V8
The Audi SQ8 is revealed as a new range topper in the UK and Europe, complete with 429bhp diesel V8 good for 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds.
Is Audi still stuck in the ‘Diesel is Best’ mindset which pervaded the VW Group for so long – and almost lead to its downfall in the Dieselgate debacle – or is diesel really best for a performance SUV?Whichever side of that argument you find yourself on (although we’d opt for Petrol for a performance SUV and diesel for a workhorse) there’s no denying that the 4.0 litre V8 diesel Audi has fitted to the new SQ8 is a belter.
The twin-turbo 4.0 litre V8 oil-burner produces 429bhp and an earth twisting 663lb/ft of torque, sent through an eight-speed automatic gearbox to all four wheels and delivering a blast to 62mph in 4.8 seconds.
It’s a clever, WLTP compliant, engine too, with the turbos in the ‘V’ of the block, sequential boost with just the smaller turbo active at low speeds and 48V mild hybrid assistance with a belt-driven alternator starter and energy recuperation.
To keep the SQ8 together if you’re using all that power, Audi has fitted adaptive air suspension their Drive Select Dynamic Handling gubbins, but if you want more you can opt for Audi’s advanced suspension package which gives you four-wheel steering, sport diff and electromechanical active anti-roll bars.
The SQ8 also get a more aggressive body kit than more prosaic Q8 models, 21″ alloys, new rear diffuser and oval tail pipes, with 22″ Alloys, red brake calipers and ceramic brakes optional. Inside there’s Alcantara sports seats, digital instruments, WifFi hotspot, and a pair of screens for Infotainment.
Due to arrive in the UK in September, expect the Audi SQ8 to cost heading for £90k.
