BMW boss Harald Kruger has confirmed a new luxury BMW model is on the way. Could this be the luxury 9-Series Gran Coupe, based on the Gran Lusso Concept?
It’s been rumoured for some time that BMW will use the Gran Lusso Concept we saw at Villa d’Este in 2013 as the starting point for a new range-topping BMW which would sit above the 7-Series, and effectively fill the gap to the Rolls Royce Ghost. And that looks to be a step nearer.BMW boss, Harald Kruger, has declared that “we will be introducing an additional BMW model in the luxury class“, and although that could mean anything, it seems likely a new 9-Series is now firmly on the cards.
Although the Gran Lusso was a two-door coupe, it won’t be that when it arrives but is expected to join the ranks of BMW’s Gran Coupe cars with four doors and a coupe profile. And although BMW nomenclature means this should be a new 8-Series, BMW have avoided reviving the 8-Series badge until now, and that seems unlikely to change.
But it wasn’t just a new luxury car Kruger announced, but other goodies to come from BMW.
They include a further confirmation that a new range-topping SUV is on the way as the X7 – to take on cars like the Range Rover and Mercedes GLS – and that the Rolls Royce Cullinan SUV is on the way, with both expected to arrive in 2018.
Finally, Kruger confirmed the roll-out of many more plug-in hybrids right across the BMW range, from the X1 to the 7-Series.
