New Lexus ES OFFICIALLY teased
The new Lexus ES will be revealed at the Beijing Motor Show later this month, and Lexus have started the tease for the new ES, a car expected to replace the GS in the UK.
Just last week we reported that the Lexus GS – the Lexus challenge to cars like the Mercedes E Class and BMW 5 Series – was being dropped and would be replaced by the new Lexus ES.The Lexus ES is currently a cheaper, front-wheel-drive model of similar size to the GS, but hasn’t been sold in the UK and Europe. But in the US, the ES outsells the GS by a significant amount, and it looks like Lexus are intent on merging the two in to a single new ES for the global market.
Using Toyota’s TNGA Platform, the new ES will have to change from the current FWD only model if it’s to effectively replace the GS in Europe, so it seems likely it could be offered with some form of electrified back axle to deliver a 4WD model and add performance.
In a shrinking market for premium saloons, it’s probably a pragmatic move by Lexus to merge two broadly similar cars in to one global product, but we’re going to have to wait a little while longer to see exactly what Lexus is planning for drivetrains and powertrains in the new ES. For now, all they’re saying is:
More than just a pretty face, this all-new Lexus vehicle aims to radically transform the concept of comfort for luxury consumers all over the world. Witness its global debut in Beijing on 25 April 2018. #ExperienceAmazing
