The 2010 Nissan Micra looks set to spawn a couple of extra variations after its launch at the Geneva Motor Show in March – a saloon and a mini MPV.
We reported back in October on the new Nissan Micra which will launch this year. Unlike the current Micra the new Micra will not be built in Sunderland but production will move to Chennai in India. Which is a tough call for Sunderland, but at least they get the new Juke to build as a replacement.
We’re not expecting the new Micra to launch in the UK until late in 2010, but it will be officially launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March. But reports are coming in that we won’t just be seeing the standard Micra in its new iteration, but a saloon version and a mini-mpv. And of course we will at some point get a replacement for the Barbie-esque Micra Convertible.
There seem to be no plans to bring the Micra Saloon to the UK, instead it is planned as a key car for the Indian and Chinese markets. But there is a chance we could see the Micra MPV arrive in Europe sometime in 2011. There is certainly a market for ever smaller MPVs, so the Micra MPV could find a ready market in Europe.
Interestingly, it seems that the next generation Renault Clio may well be built on the same V-platform (V for Versatile) but will also be built in India and not in France. Which is going to go down like a lead balloon in La Belle France.
Will we see Indian-built Clios being burned by rabid French car workers as they arrive from India? I wouldn’t bet against it.
