Opel has revealed that the Euro price for the range-extender Opel Ampera will be €42,900, equivalent to £36,500
It’s always the case that early adopters of new technology pay the price of being the first to adopt a new product or technology. Economies of scale haven’t kicked in and manufacturers are often trying to recoup their R&D as early as possible, so the price is very loaded.
Which is something understood by buyers of something new. Especially if that something new offers something more or something better. But what if the product on offer doesn’t offer anything better than that which already exists, but is simply a more complicated way of attaining something similar?
And what if the something new actually offers less than the product that already exists, but wants to charge more? How many will buy? I guess we’re going to find out soon enough when it comes to the Opel Ampera / Vauxhall Ampera range-extender / hybrid which we’re told will cost the princely sum of €42,900 when it goes on sale in Europe in 2011.
That will make the Ampera around £36.5k when it turns up as the Vauxhall Ampera in the UK. Remember, this is a Focus/Golf-sized family car with reasonable economy and average performance with a list price the same as a Jaguar XF Diesel S or a BMW 530d SE. Wow.
Still, at that price those who do buy will have the kudos of owning the only Ampera in their town. Or county. Or…
