Peugeot has revealed the 308 R HYbrid Concept – which will debut at the Shanghai Motor Show – featuring a hybrid powertrain with 493bhp and 0-62mph in 4 seconds.
Peugeot has been trailing a range-topping ‘R’ version of the 308 for a while, with the 308 R Concept from Frankfurt in 2013 looking like it was production bound. It wasn’t, but maybe that’s because Peugeot were planning this – the 308 R HYbrid?Heading for a public debut at the Shanghai Motor Show later this month, Peugeot’s 308 R HYbrid takes the performance of the 308 R Concept – basically that of the RCZ-R – and takes it to another level with an electric motor on each axle adding 114bhp each to the 1.6 litre turbo’s 267bhp for a 4WD powertrain delivering 493bhp and 0-52mph of just 4 seconds.
Peugeot has endowed the 308 with four driving modes, each capable of delivering a different driving experience, with Hot Lap Mode throwing all 493bhp at performance, Track Mode delivering a bit under 400bhp from the petrol engine and rear electric motor, Road Mode which uses the rear electric motor to help during acceleration and relies on the petrol engine in the main and ZEV Mode which uses the rear electric motor as the primary source, with the front electric motor coming in only if more performance is needed.
Bruno Famin, Director at PEUGEOT Sport, responsible for the development of the 308 R Hybrid, said:
PEUGEOT Sport’s expertise applies an uncompromising approach to meeting targets. With our experience in hybrid vehicles developed with the PEUGEOT 908, the high-performance hybrid powertrain fitted to the 308 gives a glimpse of the potential for ultra-sports models in the future.
We’d love to see the 308 R HYbrid hitting Peugeot showrooms, but we’re not sure Peugeot has the appetite for such a niche car. In all likelihood the 308 R HYbrid will serve as nothing more than a fantasy poster boy, there to make the idea of buying a more prosaic 308 more appealing.
Which is a bit of a shame.
