Porsche 911 hits the one MILLION mark
The one millionth Porsche 911 has rolled out at Porche’s Zuffenhausen plant, a specially commissioned model from Porsche Exclusive.
It’s hard to imagine a world without the Porsche 911, if for no other reason than its longevity and relative ubiquity. It’s a fixture in all our lives, petrolheads or not. You’d have to be retirement age to remember when there were no 911s on the road as it’s now 55 years since that first 911 – not much more than a titivated VW – rolled out in to the world. And in that 55 years Porsche has now built one million 911s.
That is clearly a significant milestone for any car, but for a high-end sports car which should never have worked it’s frankly incredible.
Understandably, Porsche are celebrating the milestone and have commissioned, from themselves, a one-off Porsche Exclusive 911 which is heading for the Porsche Museum.
The one-off 911 Carrera S has retro inspired details including a houndstooth pattern on the leather seats, round instruments with silver surround and wood-rimmed steering wheel with a 1964-style Porsche crest.
Other nods to the past include the Irish Green paint job and gold ‘Porsche 911’ lettering on the boot, but under the skin this is a very modern 911 S, a far more powerful 911 than that 128bhp original 911.
Dr Wolfgang Porsche said:
54 years ago, I was able to take my first trips over the Grossglockner High Alpine Road with my father. The feeling of being in a 911 is just as enjoyable now as it was then. That’s because the 911 has ensured that the core values of our brand are as visionary today as they were in the first Porsche 356/1 from 1948.
Although the millionth 911 is heading for Porsche’s Museum in Stuttgart, first it’s going on a world tour including visits to the Scottish Highlands, the Nurburgring, the USA, China and beyond.
