Porsche 928 to be revived – for the umpteenth time of promising
The revival of the Porsche 928 as a Panamera Coupe has been around ever since the Panamera first arrived, and it’s back again as Auto Bild claim the 928 is about to be reborn.
Update 25.4.19: As the never ending story of the revival of the Porsche 928 as a two-door coupe take on the Panamera rolls on, Autocar has more ‘news’ on this.
In a report very similar to this, and the other stories we’ve run on the 928’s return, the premise for the 918’s return is to fight the new BMW 8 Series, with both a Coupe and Convertible version of what could be the Porsche 929.
The timeline now is apparently 2020 with the Panamera Coupe / 929 sitting on s shortened version of the Panamera’s MSB Platform, with power options mirroring those on the Panamera, including a plug-in hybrid.
Maybe the return of the 928 really is imminent. Or perhaps we’ll be back to this story again next year.
As far back as 2009 we reported that Porsche were planning a new range-topping Panamera GT Coupe, and in the process would revive the Porsche 928, a front-engined V8 GT which was, originally, planned as a replacement for the 911. That, of course, never happened, and the 928 eventually died a death. We had another little trickle of 928 promise again in 2010 when Porsche published a sketch of what looked like a new 928 on one of their websites, but that came to nothing too, and again in 2011 we heard the 928 would be back as the 929 by 2014. Again, it didn’t happen.
Perhaps the most promising ‘928 Revival’ news came in 2012 when then Porsche boss Matthias Mueller revealed Porsche had plans to deliver both the Sport Turismo Panamera and a Panamera Coupe. We got the Panamera Sport Turismo, but we’re yet to see the Panamera Coupe to revive the 928. But it seems Porsche might actually deliver the new 928 / 929 / Panamera Coupe after all.
According to Auto Bild, new cars on the way from Porsche include a new 928, which won’t just be a Panamera Coupe, but will get its own moniker and share a fair bit with the new Bentley Continental GT. Which sounds really rather appealing. If it finally happens.
Also in the mix for Porsche in the next year or three – as well as the electric Mission E and its ‘Allroad’ Cross Turismo sibling – are a coupe take on the Cayenne and an all-electric Macan.
If the history of the last decade tells us anything it’s that all the models will arrive as suggested, apart from the ‘New’ 928. But we live in hope.
