The Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid - V8 performance and 31mpg
We brought you details on the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid back in February, but Porsche has just issued a press release confirming the details.
Porsche are claiming their heritage is the Hybrid car. Ferry Porsche developed a Hybrid car in 1900, linking a 15bhp four cylinder engine to an 80 volt dynamo. The electricity generated ran electric motors in the hubs and topped up the battery, effectively making Porsche the first car maker to produce a production hybrid car. You learn something every day.
The new Porsche Cayenne Hybrid is right up my street. Yes, it has been developed because of the world’s obsession with all things eco, but it offers the holy grail – more for less. With a 3.0 litre supercharged V6 delivering 333bhp and a 38kw motor delivering 56bhp, the Cayenne Hybrid can deliver a delicious 374bhp. It can manage the 0-60 sprint in around 6.7 seconds (on a par with the V8 S), but emmits just 210g/km of Co2 and manages 31mpg.
One really clever feature is ‘Sailing Mode’, which allows the car to seamlessly cut out the petrol engine at motorway cruising speeds (up to 86mph) saving big lumps of fuel in the process. And so close is the Cayenne Hybrid in performance terms to the V8 S that it will be marketed as the Cayenne S Hybrid. Seems reasonable.
The Cayenne S Hybrid will be coming to a showroom near you early next year.
