The Porsche Cayman is – rightly or wrongly – thought of as the Porsche for the man who can’t afford a 911, a perception that isn’t helped by Porsche’s apparent desire to protect the 911 from internal competition by keeping the Cayman in its place. But the new Porsche Cayman GT4 may just upset that balance.
Porsche has given the GT4 aerodynamic updates to shout its intent and to keep it on track including a huge wing at the back, bigger rear diffuser and a front bumper that can gulp more air, all of which, claims Porsche, not only reduces lift but creates downforce too. The GT4 also gets 20″ alloys and 30mm lower suspension.
All of which makes the GT4 stickier and shoutier (helped by the yellow paint job), but its the power jump – 380bhp, 45bhp more than the Cayman GTS – thanks to the 3.8 litre flat six, an engine largely borrowed from the 911, which gives the GT4 proper performance.
That means 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds with the manual gearbox (there is no PDK option) and a top speed of 183mph. If you care, the GT4 gets official economy of 27.4mpg.
Inside the GT4 gets a titivation too, with leather and Alcantara Sports Seats and the spec includes xenon headlights, Sport Chrono Pack, 20″ alloys, Torque Vectoring, AirCon and PSM.
The Porsche Cayman GT4 is now on sale at Porsche’s UK dealers for £64,451, it’ll get a public debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month with first UK cars due in March.
