Porsche ‘Reborn’ specialists SINGER and WILLIAMS F1 build stunning air-cooled 911 engines
Porsche specialists Singer has teamed up with Williams Advanced Engineering to deliver a modern interpretation of Porsche’s 1990 flat-six engine.
The world is full of ‘specialists’ who will make your Porsche look ridiculous and endowed with baubles and bangles and oodles of power. But there’s one company who do things very differently.Singer Vehicle Design in California doesn’t ‘pimp your Porsche’, but it does build the most stunning reimagined and recreated classic air-cooled Porsches.
We first came across Singer six years ago when they revealed their 19760s air-cooled 911 recreation, which at the time was just their third car.
But they say that if you’re good, very good, the clients will come, and what Singer creates inspires even the most hard-headed businessman to empty his wallet.
Now, Singer are adding a new dimension to their air-cooled 911 recreations with a partnership to develop a 21st century take on Porsche’s 1990 3.6 litre air-cooled flat-six in conjunction with Williams Advanced Engineering and Hans Mezger, legendary Porsche engine designer, as technical consultant.
The new engine is 4.0 litres with four valves per cylinder and four camshafts delivering 500bhp. Which is as much as any modern, naturally aspirated Porsche engine.
It revs to 9,000rpm, comes with dual oil circuits, titanium con-rods, aluminium throttle bodies and carbon fibre trumpets, ram air induction and much more.
Rob Dickinson, Singer’s founder, said:
Helping our clients realize their unique vision for a reimagined Porsche 911 with the help of automotive royalty is very much a privilege.
Singer is delighted?to be working with Williams Advanced Engineering and Hans Mezger to offer our clients a “next level” of restoration and modification services for their Porsche 911s.
With careful and dedicated development, this iconic air-cooled engine has much to give both its existing devotees and a generation of new enthusiasts.
The new Singer/Williams engine will be unveiled in September in a new 1990 911 for long-time client Scott Blattner.
