It was Mark Webber’s weekend.
Red Bull driver Mark Webber took pole position for the German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring this weekend and, despite a hiccup at the start, managed to translate that in to a double – his first pole and first win in F1.
Webber was quick off the line at the start, but got tangled up with Rubens Barrichello in the Brawn. That altercation cost Webber a 10 second drive-through penalty. But despite that he managed to command the race as the Red Bulls proved themselves to be the best cars on the grid at the moment – at least in cooler climes.
But ultimately it was the pit-stops that decided the outcome, and it was Red Bull who had the best of that. Barrichello had problems with a fuelling rig, forcing him on to a three stopper. Button was never happy with his tyres, and struggled to hang on to his eventual fifth place towards the end. Barrichello finished just behind Button in sixth. Both were being pushed hard by Alonso at the end, who seemed to come alive when he sniffed some points.
The final result was Webber first with team mate Vettel in second. Felipe Massa came in third for Ferrari (although Raikkonen retired his Ferrari towards the end of the race) and Rosberg managed a very creditable fourth place for the Williams.
Off to Turkey next. Brawn must be hoping that their changes to their car for Turkey have the desired effect. The hotter weather should help them too.
