Volvo has set itself a target of producing one million electrified cars by 2025 – that’s pure electric and plug-in hybrids – right across its range.
Volvo keeps setting itself headline-grabbing targets as it seeks to consolidate its mission to be a premium car maker with a heart and soul, and the latest is to produce 1,000,000 electric cars by 2025.
Volvo say they will be offering at least two hybrid versions of every model in its range and will be delivering its first pure electric car by 2019.
Volvo is already on the road to achieving its total (the one million ambition is a cumulative total, not annual sales) with the T8 Twin engine plug-in version of the XC90, and started its drive down the plug-in route with the V60 PHEV.
Shortly to arrive will be the T8 versions of the new S90 and V90, and the Scaleable Product Architecture which underpins the 90 Series will also be used on the next-generation 60 Series cars and include electrified versions.
But the next new range of Volvos is expected to be the new 40 Series, which will be built on a new Compact Modular Architecture and deliver a new Volvo V40 and XC40 which will also be designed to deliver both pure EV and plug-in hybrids.
This latest target from Volvo joins Volvo’s aim to eliminate deaths and serious injuries in their cars by 2020, be climate neutral by 2025 and have 35 per cent of its leading positions occupied by women by 2020 (frankly, we’d be perfectly happy to see women holding all the top positions if they were the best people for the job).
All these aims and ambitions are wrapped up in a Volvo ethos dubbed ‘Omtanke’, which is Swedish for considerate or caring.
Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo’s CEO, said:
It is a deliberately ambitious target…it is going to be a challenge, but Volvo wants to be at the forefront of this shift to electrification.
Sustainability is nothing new or something that sits outside our operations, it is something that forms an integral part of everything we do. It is simply our way of operating.
This new sustainability commitment reflects Volvo Cars’ fundamental belief that we must also grow responsibly.
All very impressive aims and ambitions from a company very successfully re-inventing itself, and if Volvo can deliver on their commitments at the same time as delivering cracking cars like the new XC90, all we can say is ‘Bravo’.
