We ran a similar story less than two months ago when we asked if the new Honda NSX would be at this week’s Tokyo Motor Show. But it’s not. Which is probably why the rumourmill is in hyperdrive with the news that Honda are now going to show the NSX at the Detroit Motor Show in January.
Of course, the new NSX has been coming almost since everyone decided – when it had gone out of production – that the old NSX was a damn fine car and that Honda should make a new version.
There were plans in place to do exactly that, but the new NSX was crucified on the cross of the recession that hit the world in 2008. Honda decided that all the world wanted was ‘Green’ and there was no place for an expensive supercar in the car world of the future. Which was logical at the time, if a little disappointing.
But things have changed since 2008 (even if the economy hasn’t) and Toyota has confirmed they are working on a replacement for the NSX. That’s lead to speculation about when it will arrive, but the consensus this time is strong that we’ll see the NSX at Detroit in January in concept form.
The concept will be the Honda Super Sports Hybrid and will come with a 3.5 litre petrol engine with a 40hp electric motor and two more electric motors of 27hp, one for each rear wheel, together with a seven-speed dual clutch ‘box (on a hybrid -wow.) and a high performance lithium ion battery pack.
But we’ll see. We could very well find ourselves sitting here writing that the new Honda NSX is due to arrive at Geneva 2012, after it fails to arrive at Detroit.
