1921 Alfa Romeo G1 up for Auction
A 1921 Alfa Romeo G1, the first ever model from Alfa Romeo and believed to be the only remaining G1, is going up for auction in January 2018.
When Nicola Romeo bought ALFA Automobil in 1919 it was the start of Alfa Romeo, and the first car produced was the Alfa Romeo G1 in 1921.Just 52 G1s were built, but Nicola Romeo couldn’t find a single buyer in Italy, so all the G1s were shipped to Australia to find home (apart from a couple of prototypes).
Now, the last remaining Alfa Romeo G1 is going up for auction with R M Sotheby’s in January, although it’s a long way from the way it looked when it left Italy.
The G1 on offer has led an interesting life, starting life as a saloon car used in the Australian Outback for herding kangaroos and cattle and even ending up being a power source for a water pump after its axle broke.
Eventually tracked down by Alfa enthusiasts, it was restored to an open cab look, and after ending up with its current owner it has been restored in the style of an early Alfa race car.
It boasts a 6.3 litre engine good for around 70bhp, and although it’s hardly a matching numbers, original condition Alfa Romeo, it still has great appeal as the last surviving remnant of Alfa Romeo’s first car.
It goes across the block at R M Sotheby’s Arizona auction in January 2018, and is being offered without reserve.
But how much is the Alfa Romeo G1 worth? Something around £1 million, perhaps?
