1962 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato auction record
A 1962 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato – one of just 19 built – has broken records for an Aston Martin by selling for £9.5 million at RM Sotheby’s sale.
Classic Aston Martin cars can fetch big money, especially if they have a James Bond connection. But even James Bond Aston Martins haven’t come close to achieving the sort of price a 1962 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato fetched at RM Sotheby’s ‘Driven by Destruction’ auction – a record-breaking £9.5 million.
This particular DB4GT Zagato – the 14th of just 19 ever made – was delivered new to its owner in Australia in 1962 and competed successfully on track, but he sold it on after a year, and the new owner sold it on again in 1968, after which it stayed in storage for over 20 years.
It returned to the UK in 1993, got a minor restoration and went classic racing before being acquired by Peter Reid, who commissioned Richard S Williams and Carrozzeria Zagato to do a complete restoration.
Back in as-new condition, the Zagato then embarked on the Concours Circuit, where it won top honours from Villa d’Este to Pebble Beach, with its final outing at The Quail in 2013.
Perhaps the best DB4GT Zagato in existence, it’s twice as rare as a Ferrari 250 GTO and, although never expected to reach the dizzy prices the Ferrari achieves, its sale for £9.5 million ($14 million) makes it the most expensive Aston Martin ever, and sets a new auction record for a British car.
So if you have deep pockets – and a lust for a DB4 Zagato – you’re going to have to dig a bid deeper than you thought. Although you could compromise with a car that looks the same – the Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato Sanction II.
