2014 (or is it 2015?) Ford Mondeo to launch in UK & Europe late 2014

January 31, 2014 By Cars UK

It seems the all new Ford Mondeo will finally launch in the UK and Europe in the third quarter of 2014, long after Ford had planned.

The story of the new Ford Mondeo for the UK Europe (which should have been the 2013 Mondeo but will end up as the 2014 or 2015 Mondeo) has been a bit tortuous.

Despite the new Mondeo being on sale in the US as the Ford Fusion since summer 2012, and in China since summer 2013 (and the reveal of the production version of the Mondeo over two years ago and a set of new Mondeo photos too), Ford’s decision to shut up shop at Genk in Belgium – the Mondeo’s traditional manufacturing plant – meant there was no way to give Europe the new Mondeo.

So we’ve had to wait for Ford to sort out production lines in Valencia to build the new Mondeo but now, according to Mark Ovenden – Ford’s UK boss – the new Mondeo will arrive in the third quarter of 2014 in the UK and Europe.

Whether our Ford Mondeo will be a facelifted version of the model we’ve already seen – after all, it will be getting on for three years old by the time it arrives here – remains to be seen.

But the new Mondeo/Fusion looks a good car, with a huge range of options and models, engines from a 1.0 litre EcoBoost plus hybrid and plug-in hybrid, four wheel drive availability and even a new range-topping Ford Mondeo Vignale to try and mop up some sales from premium manufacturers.

But however promising a car the new Mondeo is it will, sadly, never be able to rack up the sort of sales the Mondeo did when it was the default choice for business and families alike.

I thought it was an ‘Aston Martin’ face lifted version of the current Mondeo like they did with the Fiesta, because the profile looks so similar to the current one, but surprised it’s actually a redesigned chassis to take the new hybrid technology. The design has been around in the press for so long I’m starting to get a bit bored of it now, if it doesn’t get a facelift before the launch, one can’t be very far away. In fact they could have ‘Aston Martinised’ the current model for the last 3 years and then re-refreshed the latest Mondeo for its 2014 debut. I think the current AM fiesta is their best looking fiesta to date. Certainly takes away some of the ‘shopping car’ feel.

If this delayed launch approach is a success in Europe, perhaps Ford could give their next Mustang a great US launch by launching it in Europe 2 years prior as the new ‘Capri’ 🙂

As you say, the car is already more than a year old. To me, it looks dated before it is even introduced. The so-called ‘Aston Martin’ grille treatment is pretty old-fashioned, I think. And if you consider that AM have been using a variation of it for over 50 years, it is no wonder. Ford’s styling team now give us the cars that the Japanese gave us many years ago – cars you buy in spite of their looks rather than because of them. The only good looking Ford is now the Fiesta and they managed to spoil that with the wide-mouthed grille used on the current facelifted version. Ford should take a leaf out of Hyundai/Kia’s book – make cars that are really good to look at and buyers will flock to your door.
