The Dutch motoring press are reporting the new small Jaguar will be the Jaguar XS, with details at a Dutch Motor Show in April. Seems highly unlikely.
We have to confess that this is the first time we’ve heard that the New Small Jaguar is to be called the Jaguar XS. And we’re not really convinced.
According to Auto Telegraaf in Holland, not only has Jaguar decided that the replacement for the X-Type will be the XS, but for some reason we’re going to get all the detail at Auto Rai 2011, a relatively modest motor show in Holland next month.
That’s relatively modest in comparison to two motor shows in April that really do make a mark on the world stage – New York and Shanghai – and which would seem much more likely candidates for any announcement. And then there’s the name.
Car makers go to a lot of trouble to make sure car names don’t cause problems in different languages or have unfortunate alternate meanings. Mitsubishi Pajero being perhaps the best known mistake.
So we think it unlikely Jaguar would give their new small car the Jaguar XS moniker when it sounds just like Jaguar ‘Excess’, a rather unfortunate sobriquet in these constrained times.
Still, at least if it turns out to be true we’ve reported it. But we’ll be gobsmacked if it does. And let’s not forget that Adrian Hallmark hasn’t let this slip either.
If it were true, he’d be bound to have done so by now.
