2011 Turkish Grand Prix

2011 Turkish Grand Prix - Red Bull 1-2

Normal service resumed at Turkey with Vettel on pole and Webber riding shotgun. Did the McLarens – or the improving Ferraris – change that?

What a difference a year makes.

The 2010 Turkish Grand Prix was full of problems for Red Bull after Vettel and Webber collided, leading to Webber’s – seemingly justified – accusations of favouritism by the team towards Vettel. This year saw no such problems.

Instead we saw a master class from Vettel – and from Webber too – of how to take a world-beating car and show the competition just how futile their efforts are. In fact, Red Bull seemed to be beyond arrogance now; it’s got to the point where it’s almost ‘display’ driving.

The frustrations for McLaren are growing – despite a win by Hamilton last time out in China – with neither Hamilton or Webber managing to improve on their fourth and sixth place grid positions.

More worryingly for McLaren – certainly on the form in Turkey – is that it appears Ferrari could well have leapfrogged them in the pace stakes. Which could make Hamilton blow a fuse bef0re long.

Somehow, after the early promise of more cut and thrust with the new tyres, Turkey seemed all too predictable. Red Bull are walking away already – just four races in. McLaren are starting to struggle with pace and Ferrari seem to be making a comeback.

Maybe the Turkish Grand Prix seemed a bit of a damp squib because the Turks just don’t seem to have taken to F1 in a big way. Maybe – after this less than scintillating race in a country that doesn’t seem to care much – Bernie will opt to drop the Turkish Grand Prix from the F1 calendar.

Assuming the shout is still his.
