A new generation Jaguar XJR is being launched at the New York Auto Show later this month, signalling the return of the range-topping XJ with 542bhp.
Jaguar are being a bit precious with the full details of the new XJR, but they’re calling the new XJR the ‘Dynamic Flagship‘ of the Jaguar range – which is promising when you consider how fluid and able the XJ already is.
Already our favourite drivers saloon, the new XJR promises to deliver far more punch than the SuperSport with a bespoke chassis and aerodynamic developments, with the promise of supercar performance and the highest levels of luxury.
Our only reservation is that the XJ Supersport – currently Jaguar’s most powerful XJ – can sometimes be a bit overwhelmed by the power on tap, particularly when pulling out of a junction (the tip is to select Winter mode), so we hope Jaguar has addressed this with the traction control and gearbox.

All sounds great. Let’s hope the new XJR delivers on it promise (and what about the diesel XJR too, Jaguar?)

The Jaguar 5.0 litre V8 supercharged engine is capable of producing 600bhp. It was used in an XFR on Bonneville Flats and reached 225mph.

I love the idea of an XJR but surely this is just a vanity car? How many V8 petrol Supersports does Jaguar actually sell (less than 10% of total sales?) so either the XJR will sell next to nothing or the Supersport will whither and die.

I’d always hoped Jaguar would do a new XJR and this does look good to me. How quick to we think? Quicker than the XFR-S or not? Price?

Well the XJ is actually a bit lighter than the XF, so it should be around 4.5 seconds to 62mph. As for price, we reckon it’ll probably start around £110k.
