Volvo V40 gets new Drive-e D4 and T5 engines

Volvo is rolling out its new Drive-e engines to the V40 and V40 Cross Country with the Drive-e D4 and T5 available to order now.

Last year Volvo revealed its new, efficient and flexible Drive-e engines and plans to offer them in the S60, V60 and XC60 with a 179bhp D4 and a 302bhp T6. Now, the new Volvo V40 is getting Drive-e powertrains.

Both the V40 and the V40 Cross Country are getting Drive-e engine options, with both the D4 diesel and T5 petrol coming on-stream from May 2014.

In the V40, the new D4 gets 187bhp and, when fitted with the standard six-speed manual, offers emissions of just 99g/km and economy of 74.2mpg – an impressive set of stats when there’s 187bhp on offer too.

You’ll also be able to get the Drive-e D4 with Volvo’s new 8-speed Geartronic auto ‘box (for a few bob more) although it’s slightly less efficient – 109g/km and 67.3mpg in the V40 and 112g/km and 65.7mpg in the Cross Country.

If it’s petrol engines that float your boat then the 242bhp T5 – which comes as standard with the 8-speed auto – manages 47.9 mpg and 137g/km, a big improvement on the 189g/km and 35mpg in the old T5, which will cut VED and car tax.

Both the D4 and T5 engines for the Volvo V40 are available to order now, but production of the D4 doesn’t start until September.
