Porsche 918 Spyder recalled for faulty chassis components

The German take on the current triumvirate of hypercars – the Porsche 918 Spyder – is being recalled to replace chassis components that fall below standard.

2015 has been the year of car recalls, with manufacturers big and small – and cars from budget to hypercar – having to bring cars back from owners to fix problems discovered after production.

This particular recall – for the Porsche 918 Spyder, Porsche’s hybrid hypercar – is actually the second this year; earlier in 2015 a small number of Spyders needed rear-axle control arms replacing.

The latest recall is a bit more widespread (mainly because there are more 918 Spyders in the wild now than earlier in the year) and affects 205 cars.

Porsche hasn’t been very specific about the issue with the 918, but says it found quality problems in unspecified chassis components.

The press release on the 918 Spyder recall said:

As a precautionary measure, Porsche will replace chassis components in 205 vehicles of the 918 Spyder model worldwide. The reason for this is that for vehicles that were manufactured in a certain time period defective parts were used from a delivery batch, whose functionality cannot be permanently guaranteed.

No complaints have been made known (such as a break of a component) from customers up till now.

Porsche say they have already contacted the owners and that the cars will be fixed by appointment in early 2015, a fix that will take two days.

It seems that even if you spend £781,000 on a car you still can’t be sure its built as well as it should be.
