VW Golf GTE Plug-in Hybrid on sale – costs £33,035

The Volkswagen Golf GTE – VW’s plug-in hybrid Golf – has gone on sale in the UK with prices from £33,035 (£28,035 after government subsidy). First deliveries March 2015.

The VW Golf GTE was revealed by Volkswagen at the 2014 Geneva Motor show and is now finally on sale in the UK. It’s headline price – £33,035 – makes it the most expensive Golf Hatch, but the taxpayer subsidy brings that down to £28,035, still more than the Golf GTI or GTD.

For your hefty purchase price you get a five-door Golf Hatch with VW’s 148bhp TSI four-cylinder petrol engine plus a 100bhp electric motor which, when called in to action together, are enough to sprint the GTE to 62mph in 7.6 seconds.

VW claim 166mpg as the GTE’s official fuel consumption, but we’d be surprised if you did any better than a GTD unless you can do the bulk of your driving just on the electric motor.

If you’re prepared to potter around on the GTE’s electric motor only then you should be able to do up to 31 miles before you need to plug back in for a recharge; although the real world range is likely to be a chunk less.

There are no trim options for the GTE – it’s a standalone model in that sense – but it’s decently equipped with a standard DSG gearbox, styling that looks like a cross between the e-Golf and GTI (but with blue accents instead of red), LED headlights, 18″ Serron alloys, blue contrast stitching inside and Infotainment with Bluetooth and DAB (but you’ll have to cough-up for NAV – which seems bonkers on a £33k car).

On sale now, the first VW Golf GTEs will arrive in the UK in March 2015.
