Ford’s new seven-seat people carrier gets new looks, new technology and a cleverer interior as the 2015 Galaxy takes on the recent changes to the S-MAX.
The Ford S-MAX – the Galaxy’s rakish younger sibling – got a proper overhaul last year, and now its time to take the changes to Ford’s full-size People Carrier with an all-new Galaxy for 2015.Just like the S-Max, the Galaxy gets Ford’s Aston grill sitting between slim headlights, as well as a raised beltline, big glass area and a retractable panoramic glass roof.
But it’s inside the new Galaxy – which, as a people-lugger, matters most – where the big changes come.
For the first time – certainly in a Galaxy and probably in this sector – you can raise the folded seats in the third row at the touch of a button, and you can also fold both the back rows flat at the touch of another button. Which does make the Galaxy’s interior practical and easy to use.
There’s also more room- especially headroom – in the back, the back two rows slide and recline to configure the seating just how you want, there’s extra hidden storage under the boot floor, big door bins, under-seat storage and one-touch access to the third row.
To keep the Galaxy’s driver happy there’s new configurable digital instruments, Ford’s integral link rear suspension (the same as the Mondeo and S-Max), Continuous Control Damping, Adaptive Electric Steering and the option of self-levelling suspension.
Technology on offer includes Ford’s SYNC 2, Perpendicular Parking, Park Assist, Front Split View Cameras, Blind Spot Info, Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Keep Alert, MyKey and Driver Alert. Oh, and the new no-speeding electro-nanny the S-Max gets.
The choice of engines will include Ford’s twin-turbo 2.0 litre TDCi with 208bhp and 332lb/ft of torque, as well as lower powered, single turbo versions offering 178bhp, 148bhp or 118bhp, plus the petrol options with the 1.5 litre and 2.0 litre EcoBoost engines.
The new Galaxy will arrive in Ford’s UK dealers in the summer, by which time Ford will hopefully have decided how much it will cost.
