BMW boss says NO to the BMW M7 and M3 Touring

BMW M fans are always clamouring for more M models, but BMW M boss, Frank van Meel has said there will be no M7 or M3 Touring in the future.

BMW 3 Series lovers like the idea of an M3 Touring, but it seems BMW has no intention of building one, and nor will there be a high performance variant of the new 7-Series – so no BMW M7 either.

That’s according to BMW M Division boss Frank van Meel, taking to De Telegraf, who declared there to be no business case for either model.

For the M3 Touring, van Meel says the M3 and M4 do their job in their segment well, and when BMW has tried an M3 Touring in the past the demand just didn’t exist, with a real market only in Central Europe when BMW needs there to be a global demand to make a business case.

Van Meel was even more dismissive of the idea of an M7, stating that the 7-Series is an upper luxury model and simply didn’t suit the M treatment. And he might have a point; the M5 and M6 already do a sterling job (particularly the M6 Gran Coupe) and, even though Mercedes offer the S63 and S65 AMG, it doesn’t mean it’s sensible for BMW to follow suit with an M7.

Still, there is good news for M fans, with the arrival of the M2 confirmed for later in 2015, and the likely arrival of an X3M and X4M before too long.
