The new Volvo S90 – Volvo’s replacement for the S80 – is now on sale in the UK with prices from £32,555 for the S90 D4 Momentum.
Last week we revealed UK prices for the new Volvo V90 Estate, since when we’ve had umpteen emails asking how much the new Volvo S90 costs, so we thought we’d better cover the V90’s saloon sibling price and specs too.Just like the V90, the S90 arrives in the UK with just two engine options – both Drive-E 2.0 litre diesels – with the D4 delivering 187bhp and the D5 232bhp, both with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and AWD on the D5 (the D4 is FWD).
Official economy and emission numbers are good, with the D4 offering 64.2mph and 116g/km, and the D5 AWD 58.9mpg and 127g/km, with the D4 hitting 62mph in 8.4 seconds and the D5 in 7.3 seconds.
The D5 AWD S90 also gets Volvo’s PowerPulse, a technology that uses compressed air to spool up the turbo quickly and increase responsiveness, much like Audi’s electric jobbie but without the faff of electric gizmos.
Like the XC90 and the V90, the S90 comes in a choice of two trim levels, Momentum and Inscription (with R-Design doubtless arriving later), with even the Momentum spec more than appealing with its leather upholstery, LED headlights, active high beam, Climate, keyless and heated front seats.
You also get Volvo’s new Sensus Infotainment System – a model for other car makers – with its terrific 9″ tablet screen offering Sat Nav (with lifetime map updates), voice control and web access.
The S90 also gets Volvo’s latest Pilot Assist, basically a sophisticated layer on top of Adaptive Cruise which will control the car – braking, accelerating and steering – at speeds up to 80mph – and its doesn’t need to be following another car to work.
Also included is Volvo’s City Safe which includes automatic emergency braking, pedestrian, cyclist and large animal detection.
If you splash the extra cash to get an S90 Inscription – an extra £3,000 on top of the Momentum price – you get stuff like Nappa leather, a 12.3″ TFT instrument panel, 18″ alloys, handsfree boot, extra chrome and walnut inlays.
Volvo has certainly learned in recent years how to charge for individual options, but their Pack Options do offer better value, with options like the Xenium pack adding a glass sunroof, parking camera with 360 degree view and Park Assist Pilot for £1,750.
Across the board, the new Volvo S90 is £2,000 less than the equivalent V90, with prices starting at £32,555 for the S90 D4 Momentum rising to £42,055 for the S90 D5 Inscription.
You can now order the new Volvo S90 at Volvo’s UK dealers, with first cars expected to arrive with customers in September, by which time Volvo may have announced availability of the S90 T8 Hybrid as well as the R-Design versions.
With its good looks, cracking interior and clever packaging, we’re expecting the new S90 to give cars like the Jaguar XF, Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5 Series real competition, although Volvo are adamant they’re not chasing volume with the S90.
