New Toyota Prius Plug-in costs from £34,895 in the UK
The new Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid arrives in the UK complete with a 30 mile EV range and prices starting from £34,895. First customer cars in March.
Just like the regular Prius Hybrid, the Prius Plug-in is designed to shout – as Prius always has – ‘I’m green and you need to know it’. Which appeals to the Prius’s traditional buyers.
The Prius Plug-in comes with Toyota’s Dual Motor Drive System allowing the hybrid system generator to act as a second electric motor for better acceleration and a higher EV top speed of 84mph.
Power comes from an 8.8kWh lithium-ion battery – twice the capacity of the old Prius – with much quicker charging than previously; two hours with a Type II Mode III Mennekes connector or three hours plugging in at home.
Interesting stuff to make the Prius plug-in more efficient includes an optional solar power roof and a gas-injection heat pump to heat the cabin without starting the engine.
Looking much the same as the regular Prius, the new plug-in does get tweaks including running lights, longer rear overhang, rear spoiler, rear lights and separate back seats,
In the UK there are two models available – Business Edition Plus and Excel – with a spec including Touch 2 with Go, rear view camera, auto lights, HUD, Bluetooth and DAB on the Business Edition Plus, and the Excel adding stuff like auto wipers, Park Assist, parking sensors, JBL Sound and leather.
The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Business Edition Plus costs from £34,895 and the Excel from £37.095 (less £2.5k taxpayer bribe).
The Prius Plug-in is now on sale at Toyota’s UK dealers with first customer cars due in March.
