The 2017 Hyundai i30 Tourer – the new i30 Estate – is revealed ahead of a public debut at the Geneva Motor Show as the second member of Hyundai’s new i30 family.
We had a bit of a tease for what Hyundai were insisting on calling the new i30 Wagon last week, with a profile image in deep shadow showing the new i30 Estate was due soon. And here it is.Thankfully, Hyundai has remembered this is the UK and, although ‘Estate’ would be preferable, they are at least now calling this the new Hyundai i30 Tourer (creeping Americanisms are very irritating) and it’s the second instalment of what will be a proper i30 family of cars.
That family will include an i30 Fastback and a performance i30 – the i30 N – to take on cars like the Focus ST and Golf GTI, but for now it’s family time for the i30 with the estate.
Some 25cm longer than its hatchback sibling, the new Tourer gets a bit of a lumpy overhang at the back where the estate shed is bolted on, but it does deliver a seats up space of over 600 litres and a seats down of 1650 litres. Which is enough.
Engine options, at least to start with (will we get and i30 N Tourer? Nice thought),will be the 118bhp 1.0 litre three-cylinder (an engine we found to be exceptionally good in the i20 Coupe), a 138bhp four-cylinder and a single 1.6 litre diesel with 109bhp.
Elsewhere it’s all about what the i30 offers anyway, with infotainment screens according to trim level, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, Bluetooth, rear view camera, Autonomous Emergency Braking, High beam Assist, Lane Keep Assist and Driver Alert all apart of an impressive spec.
The new Hyundai i30 Tourer is expected to go on sale in late spring in the UK, and you can probably expect prices to start the right side of £20k.
