Harrods is once more running electric delivery vans in London with the Nissan e-NV200
Harrods, that world-renowned purveyor of all you could want if you have very deep pockets, takes delivery of an electric Nissan e-NV200 delivery van.
Harrods was founded in 1834 by Charles Henry Harrod with a simple, if all encompassing, motto: Omnia Omnibus Ubique. For those who escaped a public school education – and any other walk of life where Latin is of use – that translates to ‘all things, for all people, everywhere’. An accurate motto, if one that could be made more accurate by the addition of ‘opulentus’.
Harrods has been a success story not just because it delivers all the wonders of the world to those who can afford it, but because it endeavours to be one step ahead.
Back in 1919 it was running a fleet of American Walker electric vans, which eventually developed in to a fleet of 60 electric vans delivering goods across London.
But as the petrol engine improved, Harrods turned to ICE vans for their deliveries, and that’s how it’s remained – until now.
Despite now being owned by Qatar (yes, the Arab State), whose wealth is based on oil, Harrods is once more dipping its toe in the electric delivery van waters, taking delivery of a new Nissan e-NV200 to use for deliveries across London.
The e-NV200 has a range of up to 106 miles from a single charge, so Harrods reckon, with it doing 150 miles a week in London for 50 deliveries, it’ll need just a single charge to do its job.
We’d be a bit more sceptical, and say that depends very much on the volume of traffic and ambient temperatures, but work as delivery vans in a city like London is what EVs excel at.
Harrods Guy Cheston said:
We have a strong heritage in developing innovative technology, both in-store and out, and Harrods was one of the first companies in the UK to develop an all-electric commercial fleet, introducing our first electric vehicle over 100 years ago.
Electric technology has developed rapidly since our old fleet was in operation, and is now a far more sustainable transport solution. Nissan is the leader in EV technology and the e-NV200 was the obvious choice for us, allowing us to easily complete daily deliveries more sustainably and efficiently.
That sounds like Harrods are up for more than just the odd electric delivery van for their fleet, which is good for Harrods, London’s air and Nissan.
Nissan’s Gareth Dunsmore said:
The Nissan e-NV200 is designed for forward-thinking businesses and I am delighted that Harrods has put its trust in us to help them switch to more sustainable transport solutions. Harrods is demonstrating to other European retailers how EVs can help to reduce the carbon footprint of their business while providing the practicality and versatility needed to deliver goods to customers across London.
