Jaguar i-Pace – Jaguar’s electric Crossover – spotted looking production ready
The Jaguar i-Pace, Jaguar’s new electric Crossover – revealed a a concept earlier this year – spotted looking production ready on Monaco’s streets.
Car makers have been caught on the hop by brash newcomer Tesla, which has managed to deliver a premium electric car (and SUV) which not only appeals to the market, but makes long-established car makers look, well – inept. But the traditional premium car makers are fighting back, and Porsche has the Mission E on the way which should put the Tesla Model S in its place, and Audi has the electric Q6 (or whatever they’re calling it now) to poke the Tesla Model X.
But here in Blighty, Jaguar Land Rover aren’t sitting back and letting Tesla have things their own way anymore either, so the Jaguar i-Pace is (probably) heading for a production ready debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in a few months.
First seen as a concept in Los Angeles last year, and then at Geneva a few months ago, the i-Pace is a slightly oddly proportioned, not quite SUV which, now its visuals have settled in a bit, is starting to look quite appealing.
And it looks like those concept looks aren’t being messed with much, as the Jaguar i-Pace has been caught on (not great quality) video in Monaco (below) as, it seems, Jaguar film a promotional film for the i-Pace.
And if the looks are staying the same, we’re guessing the underpinnings will too.
That means 395bhp and 4WD from a pair of electric motors, oodles of instant torque, a promised range of a 300 mile range and 0-62mph in 4.0 seconds. The i-Pace also promises to be way more dynamic than the Tesla Model X and, despite Jaguar’s still not squeaky clean reputation, better bolted together too.
Of course, it will still have all the downsides of an EV: a pain to refuel, range affected massively by weather – and even more massively by how hard you drive it – and a lot of weight.
But, for now at least, there are enough benefits, especially for companies, to make premium EVs a sound bet, and Jaguar’s i-Pace punt seems likely to be a winner.
