The Rolls-Royce Sweptail is a 1930s inspired one-0ff bespoke Phantom Coupe created for a client and has debuted at the 2017 Villa d’Este Show.
The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este Show has seen some stunning creations revealed over the years, from the Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 Concept to the Aston Martin V12 Zagato, but this year’s stunner is this, the Rolls Royce Sweptail.Commissioned by a Rolls Royce client – at considerable expense, no doubt – the Sweptail shows Rolls Royce returning to its coachbuilding days with a Phantom Coupe inspired by 1930s Rolls Royce’s, and with styling cues from the world of luxury yachts.
At the front, the Sweptail looks modern Rolls, with its upright, ‘framed’ front with a huge traditional grille – milled from solid aluminium and polished to within an inch of its life – the flanks flow seamlessly like a yacht, and the back looks like a tapered stern from a racing yacht. It’s very sensuous.
But the standout part is probably the huge panoramic glass roof which accentuates the flow of the roof to that tapered rear, and bathes the interior in light.

The interior of the Rolls-Royce Sweptail takes inspiration from yachts too
That inside looks a model of simple luxury, with just s single control on display on the dash, with the clock embedded in the fascia with its details machined from titanium.
The materials on display are exceptional, with Macassar Ebony and Paldao wood and Moccassin and Dark Spice leather everywhere it could possible be. Except for where the back seats should be.
That rear space is swathed in wood – more yacht cues – there are concealed panniers each side, bespoke luggage and a concealed container in the console that delivers a bottle of Champagne and a pair of crystal flutes to the owner’s hand.
Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Rolls Royce boss, said:
Sweptail is a truly magnificent car. It exudes the romance of travel for its own sake, and immediately places ‘Sweptail’ in the pantheon of the world’s great intercontinental tourers.
Rolls-Royce’s history as the world’s leading coachbuilder is at the very core of its identity as the world’s leading luxury brand. The arrival of 103EX shone a light on the future of Rolls-Royce in this field, and ‘Sweptail’ is proof, today, that Rolls-Royce is at the pinnacle of coachbuilding.
It looks like real Rolls Royce Coachbuilt cars are back, as BMW continue to make RR what it always wanted to be.
